How to Use Narwal's "Hey, Nawa" Voice Assistant and Commands
Learn how to use Narwal's Hey Nawa voice assistant, including cleaning commands, compatible models, setup, room cleaning and NarGPT features.
Narwal's built-in voice assistant allows owners to start cleaning, send their robot vacuum to specific rooms and change cleaning settings without opening the Narwal app.
Narwal's built-in voice assistant lets owners control cleaning, target specific rooms and manage their robot vacuum without opening the app.
The assistant responds to "Hey Nawa" on compatible models. Newer robots also feature NarGPT, which allows for more conversational voice interactions.
What Voice Commands Does Narwal Support?
Narwal's voice assistant supports the following functions on compatible models.
- Start cleaning
- Pause cleaning
- Resume cleaning
- Stop cleaning
- Return to the dock
- Clean a specific room
- Start mopping
- Start vacuuming
- Adjust cleaning settings
These are supported functions rather than a complete list of exact spoken phrases. Available commands depend on the model and firmware version.
Which Narwal Models Support Hey Nawa?
Narwal offers its built-in Hey Nawa voice assistant on five confirmed U.S. robot vacuums.
Flow Series
- Narwal Flow
- Narwal Flow 2
Freo Series
- Narwal Freo Pro
- Narwal Freo X10 Pro
- Narwal Freo 20
The Flow and Flow 2 also support NarGPT, Narwal's conversational AI technology.
The Freo Z Ultra, Freo X Ultra, original Freo and Freo Z10 support voice control through external assistants such as Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri, but Narwal does not advertise built-in Hey Nawa support for those models.
The Freo 20 Edge's published specifications also identify third-party voice control rather than confirming the built-in assistant.
How to Activate Hey Nawa
Before using voice commands, the robot must be powered on and set up in the Narwal app.
- Download the Narwal app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Add your robot and follow the instructions to connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Open the robot's settings and locate the voice assistant options.
- Enable the built-in assistant if necessary.
- Complete mapping to use room-specific cleaning commands.
Once enabled, say "Hey Nawa" followed by a supported instruction.
For example, "Hey Nawa, start cleaning" tells the robot to begin cleaning without opening the app.
A separate Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant speaker isn't required.
Cleaning Specific Rooms
Hey Nawa allows owners of compatible robots to request cleaning in individual rooms instead of starting a whole-home cleaning cycle.
For example, owners can try saying "Hey Nawa, clean the kitchen."
The robot needs a completed map with correctly identified rooms. Room divisions and names can be adjusted in the Narwal app.
What Is NarGPT?
NarGPT is Narwal's conversational AI technology, available on compatible robots such as the Flow and Flow 2.
It expands voice interactions beyond short, predefined commands by allowing owners to make more natural-language requests.
This is different from Freo Mind, Narwal's automatic cleaning management system.
Freo Mind adjusts cleaning behavior based on floor conditions and cleaning needs, while NarGPT helps interpret what the owner wants the robot to do.
Not every robot with Hey Nawa necessarily supports NarGPT.
Finding Pets With Voice Commands
The Narwal Flow 2 also includes pet-related features through Pet Care 2.0.
Narwal advertises a Find Pet feature that works with the robot's cameras and pet recognition capabilities.
This allows owners to locate pets through supported functions on the robot and in the Narwal app.
Pet tracking is a model-specific feature and should not be confused with the standard Hey Nawa cleaning commands.
Changing Cleaning Modes and Settings
Narwal's voice assistant supports selected cleaning adjustments on compatible models.
Available options depend on the robot's hardware. Some Narwal models have spinning mop pads, while the Flow series and Freo 20 use continuously washed track mops.
Owners can configure cleaning modes, suction power, mop settings and room preferences through the Narwal app.
Not every app setting can be changed through a spoken command.
What If Hey Nawa Doesn't Understand a Command?
If the robot doesn't respond, check that it is powered on and the voice assistant is enabled.
Move closer, reduce background noise and try a shorter instruction.
If the assistant recognizes the wake phrase but doesn't complete the request, check the voice-control settings in the Narwal app.
Keeping the app and firmware updated can help maintain access to supported features.
